I would sneak out of my parent's surveillance to play with other kids in the neighborhood.<BR><BR>My talent was gradually noticed and I started playing as an apprentice player during my secondary school days first with a local side WATER CORPORATION F.C in 1993 and later N.E.P.A FC in 1995, all in Osogbo, Osun State (my home state).<BR><BR>On the eve of my graduating into the main team, in 1995, when I was adjudged matured enough for the local amateur league, Fanny Amun, the chief coach of the national U-17 team, extended his invitation to me. I therefore, missed an opportunity of making the expected debut and subsequently zoomed off to Lagos to join the Golden Eaglets camp.<BR><BR>I was a member of the U-17 team disqualified for bungling the second tie against Benin Republic in Ibadan. The Nigerian team failed to produce their international passports, the match did not hold and the Eaglets were booted out of the competition. That was the saddest day in my life as I was looking forward to making my mark at the U-17 level, an age group event Nigeria has been dominating.<BR><BR>The first leg in Cotonou, Benin Republic ended in a draw. We were so delighted and had expected to roast them in Nigeria during the return leg before the misadventure. The encounter in question was my debut game for the National team at any level. Hence I will always remember it with nostalgia.<BR><BR>My first outing for the country was in August 1996 in Cotonou. It was a big feat for me. I had goose pimples all over me when we filed out at the Stade de Lamite in Cotonou. At the end of the match, I just jumped up and felt so great. The game ended 0-0.<BR><BR>I later played for the Eaglets in the Meridian Cup at Portugal, which Nigeria won in 1997. This was when my friends and admirers nicknamed me 'Robocop' perhaps because of my height and the domineering role I played in the game. The victorious outing gave me much confidence as I was immediately taken to Belgium by football scouts and, after a month long trial, I signed for Standard Liege. I became a regular in the Belgium club main team instantly.<BR><BR>I came to lime light two years later in 1999 AFRICAN YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP held in Ghana when I came from defence to score two goals against Cameroun in the semi-final of the tournament. I went on to captain the Nigeria’s U-20 team to the 1999 FIFA WORLD CUP hosted in Nigeria. The team, however, did not progress beyond the quarter-final stage but I progressed professionally to make my full senior international debut with SUPER EAGLES against SIERRA-LEONE on June 17, 2000 in a world cup qualifier match in National Stadium Lagos.<BR><BR>Two years later, I made improvements in my game and career that I was named among 18 official players to the <B>2002 KOREA/ JAPAN WORLD CUP</B>.<BR><BR><BR>On my professional career in Europe, I had a stint with FC Napoli in Italy, Standard de Liège in Belgium and Austria Vienna. I am currently playing my trade with FC Sochaux of France.<BR></font></p><BR><font face="Verdana" text-align="justify" size="14" color="#FFFFFF"><B>RABIU AFOLABI, HISTOIRE PERSONNELLE</B></font><BR><BR><p><font face="Verdana" text-align="justify" size="12" color="#FFFFFF">J'ai commencé à jouer football dans les rues lorsque j'étais un jeune garçon à l'école primaire. J'essayais le plus possible d'échapper à l'attention de mes parents pour jouer avec les autres enfants du quartier.<BR><BR>Mon talent a été remarqué progressivement et j'ai commencé à jouer comme joueur apprenti à l'époque de l'école secondaire; en premier lieu avec un club local (WATER CORPORATION F.C) en 1993 et ensuite au N.E.P.A FC en 1995. Ces deux clubs, se situent tous les deux à Osogbo, dans l'état d'Osun (mon état natal).<BR><BR>A la veille de ma titularisation dans l'équipe première en 1995, quand j'ai été jugé assez mature pour le championnat amateur local, Fanny Amun, l'entraîneur principal de l'équipe des moins de 17 ans du Nigéria, m'a convoqué. J'avais précédemment manqué une opportunité de faire mes grands débuts tant attendus et de rejoindre le camps des "Golden Eaglets" à Lagos, la capitale.<BR><BR>J'étais titulaire de l'équipe des moins de 17 ans, qui fut éliminée pour avoir raté le second match contre la république du Bénin à Ibadan. L'équipe du Nigéria n'ayant pu fournir leurs passeports, le match n'a pas eu lieu et les Golden Eaglets ont été éliminés de la compétition. Cela fut le jour le plus triste de ma vie alors que j'espérais avoir l'occasion de faire mes preuves au niveau des moins de 17 ans, une catégorie que le Nigéria avait dominée.<BR><BR>Le premier match s'était soldé par un match nul à Cotonou au Bénin. Nous étions enchantés par ce résultat et nous espérions les vaincre lors du match retour au Nigéria. Cette rencontre (août 1996) à Cotonou fut mon premier match officiel pour le Nigéria. C'est pourquoi je m'en souviendrai toujours avec nostalgie. Cela fut un grand pas en avant pour moi. . J'ai eu la chair de poule quand nous sommes entrés en file dans le stade de Lamite à Cotonou. A la fin du match j'ai sauté en l'air et je me sentais vraiment très heureux. Le match s'est terminé sur le score de 0 à 0.<BR><BR>J'ai joué plus tard avec les "Eaglets" à l'occasion de la Coupe Meridian 1997 au Portugal, que le Nigéria a remportée. C'était l'époque à laquelle mes amis et admirateurs me surnommaient "Robocop"; probablement en raison de ma taille et du rôle prépondérant que j'avais joué dans la compétition. La victoire finale m'a donné plus de confiance en moi et m'a permis de passer différents tests en Belgique. Au terme d'une période d'essai d'un mois, j'ai signé au Royal Standard de Liège (Belgique). Je suis devenu titulaire quasi immédiatement.<BR><BR>Deux ans plus tard, à l'occasion du Championnat d'Afrique Juniors de 1999 disputé au Ghana, j'ai connu un moment de gloire contre le Cameroun. Au cours de ce match, bien que défenseur, j'ai pu marquer deux buts et ainsi permettre au Nigéria d'atteindre la finale.<BR><BR>Je suis devenu par la suite, capitaine de l'équipe des moins de 20 ans du Nigéria, lors de la Coupe du Monde (FIFA) de cette catégorie d'âge qui s'est déroulée dans notre pays. Bien que notre équipe ait échoué en quart de finale, j'ai pu progresser personnellement et enfin rejoindre l'équipe nationale seniors, les Super Eagles. Ce fut à Lagos, le 17 juin 2000 (j'avais tout juste 20 ans) contre la Sierra Leone, à l'occasion d'un match qualificatif pour la Coupe du Monde.<BR><BR>Deux ans plus tard, ayant progressé tant au niveau de mon jeu que de ma carrière professionnelle, je fus incorporé dans la sélection officielle de 18 joueurs pour la <B>Coupe du Monde en Asie (Corée du Sud et Japon) en 2002</B>.<BR><BR><BR>Concernant ma carrière de joueur professionnel en Europe, j'ai successivement joué en Belgique au Standard de Liège, dans le Calcio à Naples et à l'Austria de Vienne en Autriche. Je suis actuellement titulaire indiscutable, depuis 3 ans, au FC Sochaux, en première ligue française.<BR></font></p>
